Who Is Horrorking?

Over the last 10 years I have received many request for more information on how I am, and how Horrorking has developed from a few pages, to the 130+ that is consists of today. Most of these requests were answered via email, but today I decided to share some of the information, and answers to many of the questions.

Who are you? My name is David Rawsthorne. I'm in my 30's (Grin), and live in a country town in NSW, Australia. I have been reading King for 20+ years. I own and operate (And pay for) Horrorking as a hobby. Horrorking is not sponsored by any individuals or companies, but I do have some favourites that I display banner adds for.

Why was Horrorking created? I have been reading Stephen King books ever since I was given a copy of Christine by my parents. Early on I began to note the common places and people that ran through the books, but never really took a lot of notice. When I signed up for a new Local ISP in 1993, I was given a huge 5MB in webspace, so decided to create a simple page that described a few things I noticed about Stephen Kings work. It started as a single page, and soon grew to 5 or 6 pages within 12 months.

As my collection of books increased, I started to receive a few emails asking if people in one book were also in others, but my limited list of names in each book was simply not up to the task. I began the task of reading every book once again, this time noting down a lot more names and more details. Soon the site, which by this time was titled "David's Stephen King page" had grown to 30 or 40 pages, with numerous graphic files. By the time I had finished the initial round of reading the books for the webpage, the site had grown to over 2MB and over 100 files. A second round of reading increased that even further as I picked out people I had missed before.

The site began to take on a bit of a following, with 100 or so visits some days, and it was then that I decided that a domain name of my very own would be a good investment. I initially wanted a .com.au address (As I am located in Australia), but at the time it was extremely difficult to get a .au address without a registered business name. I started thinking up names I thought were good, and a few days later ended up with Horrorking.com and a few others on the "Short List". The final choice for the name was actually made by my wife!

Horrorking was initially hosted on my local ISP's server, but I left that ISP almost 4 years ago, but retained the hosting there until mid 2005, when it was moved to a server located in the USA, and later England. It now runs on a 1GB space and 30GB/month plan, and as of August 2006 it uses over half the data allocation but only a small fraction of the storage space.

Why does it take you so long to put character lists and stuff online? I usually have to wait until the book is released in Australia (Or sometimes in the USA at Amazon.Com) before I can begin reading any new book. I do not receive proof or review copies like some King sites. After that it can take 2 or 3 weeks to read, enter character lists and then place online. This means that it is often a month or two at least before any character lists or reviews are ready for publication.

Movies are even worse, as they are often not released in Australia till some time after their release in the USA and England. It also does not help that there is no cinema in town! DVD releases are often months behind, and I usually end up ordering them from the USA

Do you have every book, and how many are signed by King? I have at least one copy of each of his books, most in hardcover, but not all. I have a large collection of versions of stories from various magazines and my collection is slowly growing, with a few nice rare items scattered in there somewhere (Grin). Are any signed? The simple answer is NO - I don't own a single book signed by King (In fact I don't have a King signature here at all).

Are there "Horrorking" items available? No. I have had a few hats, t-shirts and bumper stickers produced for myself and friends in the past, but nothing for sale at all.
