The following pages contain a
list of errors, bloopers, and general mistakes in King's books. Often
the errors seem small, and I mean no disrespect to King for these
pages, and I am not picking on his excellent work.
Some people have pointed out
that some errors appear to have been deliberate, and this may well be
the case, but they have been included here for completeness.
My sincere thanks to B_Hansen at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/4612 for many of these great errors.
When an error is added, I will place a small graphic indicating that it is a new error ( ) and I will leave this there for a month or so.
Needful Things
- In the introduction we find that Frank Dodd
went crazy 12 years ago and killed a number of women. The book is based
in 1991, and making the Dodd murders back in 1979. The only problem is
that Frank Dodd committed suicide on the 17 Dec 1975, 4 years earlier.
- In chapter 7, subchapter 5 Alan tells Polly
that the last time his son Al was home it was because he needed to talk
to his friend Jimmy Catlin to help get some of his choicest programs to
run on the new Commodore 64. In 1988, the original Commodore 64 was far
from new. There were later versions of the C64 released up until the
late 1980's and even into the early 90's, so this may not strictly be
an error. While the C-64 he had may have been relatively new, the
actual model could have been quite old, or very recent - we simply dont
know. (Thanks to Kerry Wilson for more info on this error)
- In Cujo it says that Evelyn Chalmers died
on the 30th of June 1980. But in Needful Things Part 1, Chapter 2,
subchapter 1, it says that she died in 1981
- In The Dark Half Chapter 16, subchapter 6
we learn that Alan Pangborn's boys are Todd and Toby. In Needful Things
his sons are Al and Todd.
- Leyland Gaunt drove a Tucker Talisman, but
this car was never built, and only existed on the drawing board. King
claims there were three built for story purposes so he could give one
to Leland Gaunt. On the topic of Tucker, he died in the U.S. and King
said Brazil.
- In Gray Matter
it says that Richie would be by Henry's Nite-Owl once a day, to pick up
a case of that days cheapest beer. But a few pages later it says that
Timmy brought back a case of Golden light, as always.
- In Trucks
it says that the trucks drove around patrolling outside the diner with
their lights turned on. But on the next page it says that the lights
popped up in unison.
- In Sometimes They Come Back
Vinnie asks Jim how his brother is and as a reaction to that question,
it says that Jim felt his bladder loosen. And after that happened he
goes in to the classroom to teach!!!
- In Graveyard Shift it is said that bats are rodents. Zoologists generally accept that bats are not rodents.
- Chapter 4 says that the moving men brought
in a part of Louis and Rachel's double bed, but later in Chapter 17,
when Louis awakes from his nightly journey together with Pascow, he
observes that Rachel's bed is empty. So the double bed has become twin
beds, or what? (This error was discovered by Michelle and Stephanie
Robinson)
- Louis dreams that he would discuss wife
swapping with Roger and Missy Dandridge while dreaming in Chapter 16,
but later in chapter 36 Roger Dandridge's name has been changed to
David.
- After burying Church in chapter 22 it says
that Jud only grabbed the pick and walked off, while Louis took the
shovel. But on the following page it says that Louis handed Jud his
pick. A pick that he didn't carry!
- In Chapter 9 Louis notices that his
daughter always seems to wear dresses on Sundays, although they don't
attend church. But later in Chapter 37, Ellie tells Louis about
Lazarus, whom she has heard about in Sunday School. Does church and
Sunday School not go hand in hand with each other? (This error was
discovered by Holly Hoxter)
- Chapter 39 states that Jimmy Baterman died
15 July 1943, but later in Chapter 42 it says that he died on the 19th.
(This error was found by Lane - thanks)
- At the beginning of Chapter 32, when Norma
Crandall dies, it says "It had not been a heart attack. It had been a
brain embolism". In Chapter 57, after Louis has buried Gage in the
MicMac burial ground, he looks around the living room and thinks "There
was his chair, where he had done his best to explain the facts of death
to Ellie after Norma Crandall's fatal heart attack." She didn't die of
a heart attack, she died of a brain embolism. (This error was found by
Lisa J Jimenez - Thanks)
- In Chapter 57 Louis rummages through his
rather untidy bag, with ampules of morphine between the surgical
scissors and the surgical tape. Later in Chapter 60, it says that his
bag is always arranged neatly.
- When Louis filled the syringes with
Morphine in chapter 61, he puts them back in his pocket. Now we all
know just how thin the needles are, so why did they not break? Even the
plastic coverings are not all that strong.
- When Louis killed Church with the Morphine
in chapter 61, it was said that the syringe fell off and broke. Plastic
syringes are pretty hard to break!
- In Chapter 61 it says that Rachel had been
stabbed a dozen times with Louis' scalpel. But wouldn't a scalpel
break, if it had been used to stab a person at random a dozen times?
- Zenith House is mentioned as being both on the 5th Floor, 490 Park Avenue South and the 9th Floor, 409 Park Avenue South
- At the beginning of part 2, on January 4th,
1981Kenton receives a letter from Carlos Detweiller. Part 1, Page 3
says the letter was written on January 4 the quickest it would have
arrived was January 5. In part 1 page 4, Kenton confirms this by
mentioning the memo of submissions from January 11 to 15
- Parts 1 through 3 show the address as 490
Park Avenue South, and in part 3 it is specified as being on the 9th
floor. Part 4 shows the address as 5th floor, 409 Park Avenue South.
- on Page 219 there is a photo of a 25th
wedding anniversary party Herb Porter organised for his parents in
1978, making them married in 1953. Herb is 48 years old (Part 5, Page
176), and since it is 1981, that means he was born in 1933, some 20
years BEFORE his parents were married. An unlikely situation, but not
impossible
- At the beginning of part 2, on January 4th,
1981Kenton receives a letter from Carlos Detweiller. Part 1, Page 3
says the letter was written on January 4 the quickest it would have
arrived was January 5. In part 1 page 4, Kenton confirms this by
mentioning the memo of submissions from January 11 to 15
- Page 130 states LaShonda's name is LaShonda McHue, but on page 141 it becomes LaShonda Evans
